Progress is a good thing, and for me, it’s a great thing. 100 years ago, things weren’t so easy for a person living in a wheelchair. The wheelchair had been invented over a century before but was probably much more primitive than the one I’ve become accustomed to.

The first electronic television was not invented until 1927, and that was only in black and white. A colored TV was not introduced till the 1940’s. As a person who sits on her bum all day I watch an enormous amount of television and am very glad I was born in a time when watching television is so popular.

“You don’t need scores of suitors, you only need one, if he’s the right one.” – A quote from the book Little Women

As a teenager, my friend and I talked about how much fun it would be to grow up in a different era. In a time when everyone in town knew each other because they all went to the same church and almost everyone knew how to ride a horse because the horseless carriage was still a new invention. Even though there are so many things I would enjoy about living in a simpler time, there are so many modern inventions that help make life easier and help me as a disabled person to be saved from extreme boredom.

We would watch period films like “Pride & Prejudice” and “Little Women”, enjoying the big dresses and the hairstyles and of course the romance. Even though growing up in the era of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is portrayed in films as romantic and pleasant, for most people living in that day and age was very hard. Making me very grateful for living life in this century and the many things I enjoy, especially my television!

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” – Opening line in Pride & Prejudice
