Life on Wheels

Life on Wheels

The wheelchair has a long history, beginning around the 16th century with King Philip II of Spain. The invention of the wheelchair has taken centuries to be as useful and comfortable as it is now, it gives those of us without good use of our legs a life beyond the couch.

I have been in a wheelchair since I was fifteen, almost ten years now. Even though one of my greatest wishes is to not need it, my wheelchair gives me so much freedom. For my last two years of high school I went to a boarding school in Healdsburg called “Rio Lindo Academy”, I had great fun speeding around the campus on my electric wheelchair. A few weeks into my senior year my electric wheelchair could not withstand my abuse any longer and went down to the shop for maintenance. It was soon determined that Cherry( what we called the chair ) was not going to be my legs anymore, I cried; as silly as that may seem my electric chair was a huge part of my freedom and life in high school. So many fun and down right crazy memories were made with Cherry and silly as it is I’ll never forget the first electric chair that gave me my wings.

Being in a wheelchair your not only shorter than everyone else, but you also feel less… human. I know it sounds completely ridiculous, but I feel like being in a wheeling makes me less of a desirable person somehow. No matter how many people in your life love you, there is always room for self doubt and self criticism, I am no exception.

I have not taken many photographs of me in my wheelchair, seeing it as my weakness. I want people to see me and not my disease. But life has been kind to me and given me family and friends who don’t see the wheelchair or the disease, but see me.

  1. I think you should take more photos of yourself in your wheelchair; you are a beautiful and very photogenic woman. Also, nothing you said sounded silly or ridiculous; your first wheelchair was a major experience in your life and I’m glad you have great memories surrounding it.

  2. I agree with sosongwriting. You are really beautiful and very photogenic. I love the picture of the wheelchair on your wedding day. Congratulations! It is a little hard to make out the year you got married. How long have you been married?

  3. I remember when Cherry died! That was a sad day… </3 We were pretty mean to that poor thing, hahaha! I remember many a time when someone would be on your lap, someone would be on the back and Cherry would rebel, taking a sudden and uncontrolled spin and then die. Haha! Ah, the blinking lights. And yet, as soon as it turned back on, we'd load back up. Hahaha!
